🔥 What’s Hot in AI News:

OpenAI announces SearchGPT, its AI-powered search engine

OpenAI has announced SearchGPT, an AI-powered search engine prototype aimed at providing organized, real-time information from the web, distinguishing it from traditional search engines like Google. Unlike conventional search results, SearchGPT delivers summarized findings with clear attributions and links, and allows for follow-up questions. Initially available to 10,000 test users, it features collaborations with news organizations to ensure accurate content management. As OpenAI continues to integrate this technology into ChatGPT, it poses a competitive challenge to Google's AI features and similar services like Perplexity.

Runway’s AI video generator trained on thousands of scraped YouTube videos

Runway’s AI video generator, Gen-3 Alpha, was trained using a vast dataset that includes thousands of YouTube videos and pirated films, according to a report from 404 Media. The training data encompasses content from major entertainment and tech companies such as Netflix, Disney, Nintendo, and various YouTube creators, as well as news outlets like The Verge. This dataset was amassed through a company-wide effort using web crawlers to avoid detection by Google. Despite the significant funding from Alphabet and Nvidia, and impressive capabilities of Gen-3 Alpha, the use of such data raises ethical and legal concerns, with YouTube's CEO labeling it a violation of platform policies. Other AI companies, including OpenAI and Anthropic, have also reportedly used YouTube videos for training their models.

Google makes its Gemini chatbot faster and more widely available

Google is upgrading its Gemini AI chatbot with the new Gemini 1.5 Flash model, enhancing performance and understanding while expanding availability to 40 languages and 230 countries. The context window now supports longer text, and file uploads will be accessible to all users. To mitigate AI hallucinations, Google is introducing links to related web content in Gemini's responses. Additionally, Gemini is being rolled out to more regions, including a teen-focused version with added safeguards. These updates aim to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and broaden accessibility, making Gemini a strong competitor against other AI tools.

China Is Closing the A.I. Gap With the United States

A.I. generated video created from text prompts using Kling, a Chinese company Kuaishou.

Chinese tech companies are rapidly closing the AI gap with the United States by unveiling advanced AI technologies now accessible to consumers and developers. At the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, companies like Kuaishou showcased sophisticated AI tools, such as the video generator Kling, that rival American offerings. Open-source development has been key to China's progress, allowing quicker innovation and broader distribution of AI technologies. Despite facing U.S. trade embargoes and censorship challenges, Chinese firms are advancing quickly, potentially leading to a future where American developers might rely on Chinese open-source AI systems.
