🔥 What’s Hot in AI News:
Amazon’s AI shopping assistant rolls out to all users in the US
Amazon has expanded its AI shopping assistant, Rufus, to all users in the US on its mobile app. Accessible via an orange and blue icon, Rufus can answer product-related questions, compare items, and provide order updates using Amazon's listings, reviews, and community Q&As, supplemented with some web data. Initially launched in February to a limited group, Rufus can now assist with inquiries like product maintenance, recommendations, and order statuses. Additionally, it can respond to broader questions, including political topics, though its guidance sometimes directs users to related Amazon search results. Currently in beta, the assistant's safeguards on sensitive subjects such as elections may still need refinement.
Microsoft’s Copilot AI now understands your terrible handwriting
Microsoft is integrating its Copilot AI into OneNote to read and analyze handwritten notes. This feature, currently in beta, allows users to write notes with a stylus and have them summarized, converted to text, or used to generate to-do lists. Copilot, launched in OneNote in November, will be available to Copilot for Microsoft 365 subscribers and Copilot Pro users. In tests, Copilot accurately converted handwriting to text and formatted it, although its performance with particularly bad handwriting remains uncertain. To try this feature, users must be Microsoft 365 Insiders with the latest OneNote build and a relevant subscription.
How Apple Intelligence is changing the way you use Siri on your iPhone
Apple is enhancing Siri with its generative AI, Apple Intelligence, and a partnership with OpenAI, launching this fall. This update will integrate ChatGPT, allowing Siri to answer more complex questions and handle tasks like identifying plants from photos and pulling information from documents. Siri will gain personal context awareness, enabling it to perform personalized tasks based on user data, and improved natural language understanding for smoother interactions. Users will also be able to type queries to Siri, beneficial in noisy or quiet environments. Additionally, Siri will have enhanced product knowledge for Apple devices and onscreen awareness to interact with content visible on the device. The new capabilities also extend to performing actions across multiple apps, streamlining tasks such as editing photos and sending messages.
There’s always something happening to OpenAI’s board
In the latest "Equity" podcast, TechCrunch discussed Elon Musk's legal win in a severance lawsuit, though he faces more challenges. Microsoft left its observer seat on OpenAI's board, likely due to antitrust concerns. Duolingo acquired animation studio Hobbes, hinting at future AI sector acquisitions. The podcast also explored what happens when founders die, citing Unseen Capital's acquisition by Seae Ventures after its founder's passing. Lastly, a survey indicated deep tech companies led by technical CEOs raise larger funding rounds, with potential regional differences between Europe and North America.
