🔥 What’s Hot in AI News:
Microsoft introduces Surface PCs that run AI models and cost less than earlier versions
Microsoft has introduced two new Copilot+ PCs—the Surface Laptop and Surface Pro—that use AI without needing the internet. These updated devices are cheaper than last year’s versions, starting at $899 and $799, and have smaller screens but longer battery life. Powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Plus chip, they run Windows 11 and offer new AI features like Recall, smarter screenshot tools, and voice-command settings changes. Microsoft hopes the launch, ahead of Windows 10 support ending in October, will boost upgrades, even though demand for AI PCs has been slow. Preorders are open now, with a release date of May 20.
Google’s iOS app will use AI to simplify jargon
Google has launched a new AI feature called Simplify for iPhone users in the Google app. It helps make complicated text, like medical or technical terms, easier to understand without leaving the web page. Just highlight the text and tap the Simplify icon. Powered by Google’s Gemini AI, it’s designed to keep important details while explaining things in simpler words. Google hasn’t said if it will be available for Android or desktop yet.
Gemini 2.5 sets the standard for AI-powered interactive web apps
Google has released early access to Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview (I/O Edition), offering significant improvements in coding, particularly for building interactive web apps, code editing, and developing complex workflows. Originally set for a Google I/O release, the early launch allows developers to start using these powerful tools right away. Gemini 2.5 Pro now leads the WebDev Arena Leaderboard with a +147 Elo point increase and boasts impressive performance with 84.8% on the VideoMME benchmark. It also excels in multimodal tasks like image, audio, and video understanding. Developers can access it through Google AI Studio and the Gemini app, with upcoming availability on Vertex AI.
Introducing Anthropic's AI for Science Program
Anthropic has launched a new program called AI for Science to help researchers use AI to speed up scientific discoveries, especially in biology and life sciences. The program offers free API credits to scientists working on important projects, such as understanding diseases, improving agriculture, or analyzing genetic data. By using Anthropic’s advanced AI tools, researchers can save time, generate new ideas, and make faster progress. Scientists from research institutions can apply through a form, and Anthropic’s team will choose projects based on their potential impact and how well AI can support them.
