đĽ Whatâs Hot in AI News:
Nvidia challenger Groq expands with first European data center
AI chip startup Groq has opened its first European data center in Helsinki, Finland, in partnership with Equinix. This move is part of Groqâs global expansion to meet the rising demand for AI in Europe, especially in the Nordics, where cool weather and renewable energy make it ideal for data centers. Groq makes a special type of chip called an LPU (Language Processing Unit), which is built for AI inferenceâhelping AI tools give fast responses to users. Unlike Nvidiaâs chips, Groqâs LPUs donât need expensive parts, making them easier and cheaper to produce. The new Helsinki center was set up quickly and is expected to start operating within days, allowing European companies to access Groqâs AI technology through Equinixâs cloud-connected platform.
First AI-powered self-monitoring satellite launched into space
Researchers at UC Davis, in partnership with Proteus Space, have created a new kind of satellite that can monitor and predict its own condition using artificial intelligence. Itâs the first time a satellite will have a built-in âdigital brainâ that allows it to operate independently in space without needing to send data back to Earth. The satellite includes a âdigital twinââa smart computer model inside the satellite that constantly checks the health of its batteries and power system. Unlike older satellites, which rely on ground updates, this one can make decisions on its own. Even more impressive, the entire mission is being completed in just 13 monthsâa record-fast timeline for space projectsâwith launch planned for October 2025 from California.
Google's AI Overviews hit by EU antitrust complaint from independent publishers
A group of independent publishers has filed an antitrust complaint with the European Commission against Google, accusing it of misusing their content in its AI OverviewsâAI-generated summaries that appear above regular search results. These summaries, now shown in over 100 countries and recently monetized with ads, allegedly reduce clicks to original publisher websites, leading to major losses in traffic, readership, and revenue. The group argues that Google is abusing its dominant position in search and has requested urgent action from EU regulators to pause the rollout, claiming the damage to publishers is already significant and ongoing.
AI-Generated Studies? Bombshell Rocks Academia
A new study from researchers at the University of TĂźbingen in Germany found that AI-written scientific papers may be more common than expected. They analyzed PubMed abstracts and identified a list of 454 words that large language models like ChatGPT tend to overuse. By scanning millions of papers for these signs, they estimate that between 13.5% and 40% of the biomedical research papers were likely written, at least in part, with AI assistance. That could mean over 200,000 papers had AI involvementâpossibly many more if researchers used AI for early drafts and rewrote them later. The findings raise concerns about transparency in academic publishing and the growing reliance on AI in scientific writing.
