🔥 What’s Hot in AI News:

ChatGPT’s Mac app is here, but its flirty advanced voice mode has been delayed

OpenAI has launched a desktop app for ChatGPT on macOS, which allows users to easily access ChatGPT by pressing Option and Space. However, the advanced voice mode, which was showcased at OpenAI's Spring Update event, has been delayed. This mode, featuring human-like interaction capabilities, will now begin alpha testing for a select group of ChatGPT Plus subscribers next month, with broader access planned for the fall. OpenAI is refining the feature to improve content detection and ensure safety. Video and screen sharing capabilities were also announced but their release timeline remains uncertain. A Windows version of the ChatGPT app is expected later this year.

The owner of Toys ‘R’ Us just used OpenAI’s Sora to animate the zombie brand

Toys "R" Us is attempting a comeback by utilizing OpenAI's Sora, a generative AI text-to-video tool, to create what it calls the "first-ever brand film" using this technology. WHP Global, which licenses the Toys "R" Us brand to stores like Macy's, is behind this initiative. The video was partially AI-generated, with Sora handling about 80-85% of the work, while human creatives added final touches. The film premiered at the Cannes Lions Festival and is available on toysrus.com. WHP Global is also planning to expand the brand with new stores in the US and internationally.

Reddit escalates its fight against AI bots

Reddit is intensifying its efforts to prevent AI bots from scraping its data by enforcing stricter rules on automated access. Moving forward, most bots will be blocked unless they secure a licensing deal, as companies like Google and OpenAI have done. Although this policy isn't new, Reddit will now actively enforce it through updates to its robots.txt file, which guides web crawlers on how they can interact with the site. This move aims to ensure that only authorized entities access Reddit's data, while deterring unauthorized use. This shift addresses the growing trend of AI companies using online data for model training without proper agreements.

What the RIAA lawsuits mean for AI and copyright

The RIAA has sued AI startups Udio and Suno for allegedly using copyrighted music without permission to train their models, which generate realistic songs. The lawsuits question whether this constitutes fair use, a legal defense that allows the use of copyrighted material in transformative works. The RIAA argues that these AI-generated songs threaten the music industry's business model and demands significant damages. Legal experts suggest a potential fair use defense if the AI models only abstract non-copyrighted elements. The case's outcome could set important precedents for the AI industry regarding the use of copyrighted materials in training models.
