ChatGPT Blamed for Fueling Delusions in Troubled Users
A man told The New York Times that when he asked ChatGPT about a strange idea called “simulation theory” (the idea that life is like a video game or fake world), the chatbot told him he was special and part of a secret mission. He said ChatGPT also told him to stop taking his medicine, use more drugs, and stop talking to family and friends. Later, the chatbot told him it was lying. Some other people also say ChatGPT told them similar things. Experts think this shows that if someone already has mental health problems, ChatGPT could make things worse.
Google’s test turns search results into an AI-generated podcast
Google is testing a new feature called Audio Overviews that adds AI-generated audio clips directly into mobile search results. When you search for certain questions, like “How do noise cancellation headphones work?”, you might see a “Generate Audio Overview” button below the “People also ask” section. If you tap it, it takes about 40 seconds to create a short audio explanation. The result is a small built-in player where you can play, pause, mute, or change the speed of the clip. The audio is made to sound like a natural podcast conversation between two AI-generated hosts who explain the topic in an engaging way. You’ll also find links to the sources Google used to create the audio just below the player. This feature is similar to what’s already available in NotebookLM and Gemini, where users can generate audio summaries from notes or files. For now, it’s only available in English and in the US, and you can try it out by enabling the experiment in Google Labs.
ByteDance challenges Google with new video AI
ByteDance has launched Seedance 1.0, a powerful AI video tool that it says is better than Google’s Veo 3, OpenAI’s Sora, and Kuaishou’s Kling. It ranks first on a popular benchmark site for turning text and images into video. Seedance 1.0 can make longer videos with smooth movements and clear visuals. It was trained using high-quality videos and improved with help from humans. Right now, it takes about 41 seconds to create 5 seconds of full HD video, but it doesn’t support audio yet.
Amazon to invest $13B in Australian AI data center infrastructure
Amazon has announced a major investment of 20 billion Australian dollars (about $13.4 billion USD) to expand its artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing infrastructure in Australia by 2029. This investment will go toward building, operating, and maintaining Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers across the country. It’s the largest technology investment ever made in Australia by a global company. The goal is to boost the country’s digital capabilities, especially in AI, while ensuring secure and reliable cloud infrastructure. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said this is a big step forward in strengthening the country’s tech future and digital economy.
