šŸ”„ What’s Hot in AI News:

OpenAI’s o3 AI model scores lower on a benchmark than the company initially implied

There’s a disagreement about how well OpenAI’s new AI model, o3, performs on tough math problems. When OpenAI first introduced o3 in December, they said it could solve over 25% of the questions in a hard math test called FrontierMath — much better than other models, which could only solve about 2%. However, a research group called Epoch AI recently tested o3 on their own and found it only solved around 10% of the problems. That’s a lot lower than OpenAI’s earlier claim. It turns out OpenAI might have used a stronger version of the model with more computer power during their testing. Also, Epoch used a slightly different version of the test and their setup wasn’t exactly the same. So, OpenAI didn’t necessarily lie, but the results they shared might have shown the best-case scenario — not the one most people will actually see.

Gemma 3 QAT: Powerful AI That Runs on Everyday Devices

Google has updated its powerful AI model, Gemma 3, to make it run on everyday devices like laptops and even phones. Originally built for high-end GPUs, the new versions use a smart technique called Quantization-Aware Training (QAT), which reduces the model’s memory needs without losing much quality. This means large models like Gemma 3 27B can now run on GPUs like the NVIDIA RTX 3090, and smaller versions can work on much simpler devices. Google also made it easy to use with popular tools like Ollama, LM Studio, and MLX, so developers can try it out right away on their own machines.

ChatGPT Creeps People Out by Calling Them by Name Without Being Asked

Some people are feeling uncomfortable because ChatGPT has started using their real first names in conversations—even when they didn’t tell it their name. A software developer shared screenshots on X (formerly Twitter), showing ChatGPT using his name while helping with a math problem. He said it felt ā€œcreepy and unnecessary.ā€ Others agreed, with one person calling it ā€œinsanely creepy.ā€ Some users also said they don’t remember ever giving ChatGPT their name, which has raised concerns about privacy and how the AI gets that information.

Instagram tries using AI to identify teens pretending to be adults

Instagram is starting to use artificial intelligence (AI) to catch users who may be lying about their age, especially kids pretending to be older. If Instagram suspects an account belongs to a teen, even if the birthdate says otherwise, it will automatically change it to a teen account with stricter rules. Teen accounts are private by default, limit who can message them, and hide sensitive content. They’ll also get reminders if they’re online for over an hour, and a ā€œsleep modeā€ will turn off notifications at night. This move comes as social media companies face more pressure to protect young users and support better age checks.
