🔥 What’s Hot in AI News:
OpenAI unveils a new ChatGPT agent for ‘deep research’
OpenAI has introduced Deep Research, a new AI agent designed for in-depth, reliable research on complex topics. Ideal for professionals in finance, science, policy, and engineering, as well as consumers making big purchasing decisions, Deep Research analyzes multiple sources to provide thorough insights rather than quick summaries. Available now for ChatGPT Pro users (100 queries/month) and expanding soon to Plus, Team, and Enterprise users, it’s currently web-only, with mobile and desktop integration coming later this month. Users can select “Deep Research," enter a query (with the option to attach files), and receive results within 5 to 30 minutes via notification.
SoftBank, OpenAI unveil Japan AI joint venture
Masayoshi Son, the CEO of SoftBank, announced that SoftBank has partnered with OpenAI to establish a joint venture in Japan, called SB OpenAI Japan, aimed at offering AI services to corporate clients. The venture will be a collaboration between OpenAI and SoftBank, alongside its telecom subsidiary. As part of the deal, SoftBank will also commit to paying $3 billion annually to integrate OpenAI's technology across its group of companies. This partnership signals a major step in expanding AI capabilities within Japan's corporate sector.
Microsoft Paint is getting a Copilot button, too
Microsoft is expanding its AI tools with the introduction of a Copilot icon in Paint, available to Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev channels. This new feature is part of a broader update rolling out now, bringing generative AI tools like Cocreator, Image Creator, and Generative Erase to Paint. By clicking the Copilot button in the taskbar, users can access these tools through a dropdown menu. This move aligns with Microsoft's ongoing strategy to integrate Copilot across its apps and devices, making AI functionality more accessible across Windows.
The EU is now enforcing the AI Act, banning high-risk AI systems
Under the EU AI Act, high-risk AI systems can no longer be used, including social credit scoring, which ranks individuals based on behavior or reputation; predictive policing, which analyzes facial features to forecast crimes; and mass biometric surveillance, restricting real-time facial recognition except in extreme law enforcement cases. The law also bans subliminal manipulation, where AI influences decisions without user awareness, and profiling vulnerable groups, such as children or individuals with disabilities, to prevent exploitation. These AI applications are now prohibited to protect privacy, prevent discrimination, and ensure ethical AI use.
