Amazon offers peek at new human jobs in an AI bot world

Amazon has revealed a new robot named Vulcan that can "feel" and is being used to take over some physically demanding tasks in its warehouses. Vulcan can reach items on high and low shelves, reducing the need for workers to climb ladders or bend down all day, which Amazon says will make the job safer. However, while the robot is taking over more of the picking tasks, humans are now mostly handling items stored at mid-level shelves or those Vulcan can’t yet manage. Amazon also says it’s training a small number of warehouse workers to become robot technicians, suggesting that while some new job opportunities are being created, they may be limited.

Microsoft and OpenAI may be reworking their partnership agreement

OpenAI and Microsoft are rethinking their partnership as OpenAI plans to become a for-profit company while still being guided by a nonprofit board. Microsoft, a major investor, is in talks about how much of the company it will own and is asking for long-term access to OpenAI’s future technology. The two companies are also becoming competitors in some areas, which adds tension. This could lead to big changes in how AI tools like ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot grow in the future.

SoundCloud says it isn’t using your music to train generative AI tools

SoundCloud recently clarified that it is not using music uploaded by users to train generative AI models. This came after concerns arose when SoundCloud updated its terms of service, which mentioned AI-related uses of user content. However, the company explained that the update was meant to cover AI features like personalized recommendations, fraud detection, and content organization, not AI training. SoundCloud also reassured users that it has technical safeguards in place to prevent third parties from using its content for AI training. In the future, if AI tools were ever used with user content, SoundCloud promised clear opt-out options for users.

AI can now predict cancer survival by analysing an individual's selfie

Researchers have created an AI tool called FaceAge that can look at a selfie and estimate how old someone looks based on their health, not just their real age. In a study with over 6,000 cancer patients, the tool helped predict how likely a patient was to survive—those who looked older than their actual age had a higher risk. When doctors used this tool, they were better at predicting short-term survival. This could help doctors make more accurate treatment decisions.
