🔥 What’s Hot in AI News:
Global Chaos caused by CrowdStrike Software Update Flaw
A faulty update from CrowdStrike has caused global outages by crashing Windows computers running its Falcon Sensor software. This has disrupted businesses, airports, and healthcare systems. Although a fix has been issued, recovery is expected to take time. The U.S. government is involved in managing the situation, and CrowdStrike has provided a workaround to help affected users.
OpenAI unveils cheaper small AI model GPT-4o mini
OpenAI has introduced GPT-4o Mini, a cost-effective and energy-efficient AI model designed to expand access to its technology. Priced significantly lower than its predecessor, GPT-3.5 Turbo, the GPT-4o Mini costs 15 cents per million input tokens and 60 cents per million output tokens, making it over 60% cheaper. It outperforms GPT-4 on chat preferences and has achieved an 82% score on the Massive Multitask Language Understanding (MMLU) benchmark. The new model, which supports text and vision, will be available to ChatGPT Free, Plus, and Team users from July 18, with enterprise access starting the following week.
OpenAI’s latest model will block the ‘ignore all previous instructions’ loophole
OpenAI's new model, GPT-4o Mini, introduces a safety feature called "instruction hierarchy" designed to prevent users from exploiting chatbots by instructing them to "ignore all previous instructions." This technique ensures that the model prioritizes the developer's original commands over any conflicting user prompts. By giving system instructions higher importance, the model is better protected against misuse and unauthorized commands. This update is part of OpenAI's broader effort to enhance AI safety as it moves towards more advanced, fully automated digital agents.
Google’s Gemini AI will be all over the Paris Olympics broadcast
Google will prominently feature its AI technology during the 2024 Paris Olympics as the official AI sponsor for Team USA. The broadcast, starting July 26, will showcase Google’s AI tools, including 3D views of Olympic venues through Google Maps' Immersive Views. Announcers will use Google Search AI Overviews to provide information, and comedian Leslie Jones will engage with Google's AI tools in various scripted segments. Additionally, Olympic athletes will appear in promotional content using Google’s AI and mapping features to explore Paris.
