🔥 What’s Hot in AI News:
AI music startups say copyright violation is just rock and roll
AI music startups Suno and Udio, facing copyright lawsuits from major record labels, claim their AI training methods are protected under fair use. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) alleges these companies illegally copied vast amounts of copyrighted music. Suno and Udio argue their AI models analyze existing music to help users create new works and accuse the industry of suppressing competition. The RIAA counters that using copyrighted material without consent is unfair and harms artists' livelihoods.
Nvidia faces two DOJ antitrust probes over market dominance
The US Department of Justice (DOJ) has launched two antitrust investigations into Nvidia. One probe examines Nvidia's $700 million acquisition of Run, an Israeli GPU management software startup. The other investigates whether Nvidia used its dominance in AI chips to discourage customers from using competitors' products and overcharged those who did. Nvidia, controlling 70-95% of the AI chip market, faces scrutiny over potential anti-competitive practices, with similar concerns being raised by international regulators. Nvidia denies any wrongdoing and claims to compete fairly based on innovation and investment.
Microsoft now lists OpenAI as a competitor in AI and search
OpenAI has begun rolling out ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode, offering hyperrealistic audio responses, to a select group of ChatGPT Plus users. The feature, introduced in May 2024, initially faced delays due to legal concerns over a voice resembling Scarlett Johansson's. Now, available in an alpha version, this mode integrates multimodal GPT-4o, enabling low-latency, emotionally nuanced conversations without auxiliary models. Users will have access to four preset voices created with voice actors. OpenAI has implemented safeguards to prevent impersonation and copyright issues, intending a full rollout by fall 2024.
Google brings Gemini-powered search history and Lens to Chrome desktop
Google is introducing new Gemini-powered features to Chrome’s desktop version, including Google Lens, tab compare for shopping, and natural language search for browsing history. Lens allows users to select parts of a webpage or objects in images for more information and related searches. The Tab Compare feature provides AI-generated summaries of product specs, prices, and reviews from different tabs. Users can also search their browsing history with natural language queries, like "What was that ice cream shop I looked at last week?" These features will roll out globally over the coming weeks, with natural language history search initially available as an opt-in for U.S. users.
